RaMet Report: a blog of Remarkable Relevancy
Greetings, esteemed krewe members of our Mystic Society:
This has been quite a year for RaMet, hasn’t it? It is written in the book of Ecclesiastes, “to everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven…”. I will say that I have laughed and cried more in the past year than any other time in my life. Together as a krewe, we have loved and lost some dear members (who are - no doubt - demonstrating the “Cupid Shuffle” to a bemused Heavenly Host even as you are reading this). We have expanded our membership with some wonderful and creative people who are each bringing our krewe a new spirit. Our krewe has moved into the 21st century with a new website, a Facebook page, accounts on Instagram and Twitter (President Trump follows RaMet on Twitter, by the way….). To top off this season of all seasons, we have one of the most entertaining, hard-working, fun-loving, and good-looking RaMet royal courts of the past 79 years! We began this Carnival season with a wonderful Summer Mixer at the home of Patti and Sazarac Russell. Many new members joined us after Sazarac won them over with her charm. As the season changed, we enjoyed a Fall mixer at the home of Rose and Terry Gwaltney, where too much chili was eaten and judged. Winter began to move closer as we enjoyed the Christmas Party and the reveal of our King Ra LXXIV, Charlie from the House of Smithers. After a raucous (and successful) Trivia Party, we knew Winter was even closer with a chill in the air while we enjoyed a hot time at the Queen’s Asking Party naming our Queen Ma’at LXXV, Sara from the House of Van Dyke. Our court was complete with Duchesses Rose Gwaltney, Judy Looney, Gara Toohey, Margaret Lawrence, Grand Duchess Ann Ince, and Flagman Colquett Van Dyke. “Winter is coming!” became our rallying cry and cheer throughout the following months of Carnival activities. I am NOT biased when I tell you that many members of other krewes told me our RaMet coronation set the standard for the rest of them. I know you will agree with me that none of the rest of the coronations came close to ours, bless their hearts. Our grand Court has led us through the Carnival Season with grace and style becoming of our RaMet Royalty. Hip! Hip! Hooray!!! RaMet has been really active this year in Memphis: we rolled in the Liberty Bowl parade, and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We made an annual event out of duct-taping Ed Galfsky up on a wall during our Trivia party, while raising money to support our children’s charities. RaMet tailcoats have been seen at popular venues around town, including Krewes for Kids at the newly opened Crosstown Center (which more than 600 people attended. I’m certain most of them were pea-green with envy of our tailcoats. Just saying.). Our Royalty found their rhythm and soul by singing in the Karaoke Contest with RaMet’s support. Our true blue talent became even more apparent with our Black Tie & Tennis Shoe performance (who knew Queen Sara sings exactly like what’s-her-name from Frozen??). Our innate krewe athleticism was put to the test at Phoenix Games with King Charlie also “captaining” our competitions. Truly, I say unto y’all, RaMet rocks (and rolls!)!! With Carnival Week ahead, our Royalty is ready for Crown & Sceptre, our duchesses are ready to judge the other krewes' mini floats (and be bribed) at our Clubroom, and we should all plan to attend as much as possible of the rest of Carnival Week parties, day runs, teas, luncheons, and other clubrooms. I salute each RaMet royal personage for personal sacrifice and valor in the field of this Carnival season. As your true blue Supreme Effendi, I am honored to host our krewe at our annual Last Nighter business meeting/supper/party. The World Famous RaMet Bar will be making a very rare appearance for your enjoyment. Watch your mail and email for your invitation. This venue is a great opportunity to invite prospective new members, as it will give them a chance to begin the new Carnival Season with RaMet. The Wine and Cheese Cocktail Party is hosted by the past Kings of RaMet to honor the ladies of RaMet. Invitations are extended to the ladies of RaMet and the Royal Court of other Krewes only. Phoenix Clubroom is Tuesday night at the Crescent Center! If you want to see our beloved Ra jump up & down with joy when he wins, you ought to attend Phoenix because we will be receiving the Phoenix Games trophy we worked so hard to earn. Ptolemy Clubroom is always a fun event since you can dress in Ancient Greece attire this year. Bring on the TOGAS. Copyright © 2017 RaMetNewsletter, All rights reserved. Our krewe really was true blue this past Saturday; it was cold, wet, and windy. We prevailed! RaMet rolled out two floats, a convertible for Ra and Ma'at, and some hardy foot soldiers to delight the crowds along the route with beads and banter! Then, the #truebluekrewe continued the celebration at Silky Sullivan's, too!
Our royalty and krewe have enjoyed relaxing after our own coronation by celebrating with our friends! Here's to the Grand Krewes of Luxor and Phoenix! Hip! Hip! Hurray! #truebluekrewe
RaMetters and Royals enjoyed a festive evening at Southwind CC this past Friday night as we celebrated the Sphinx krewe's 2017 coronation. It sure was nice and relaxing to just sit back and cheer for our Sphinxie friends after all of our own festivities last weekend! We enjoyed a little pre-coronation libation or two at the Mesquite Chop House in Germantown. Next week: Luxor! Hip! Hip! Hurrah! #truebluekrewe
On February 4, RaMet welcomed all of the Grand Krewes of Carnival Memphis to a Winter Wonderland to witness the coronation of Ma'at LXXV by Ra LXXIV. A great celebration was enjoyed by all! Three cheers for our 2017 Royal Court: Queen Sara Van Dyke, King Charlie Smithers, Duchesses Rose Gwaltney, Judy Looney, Gara Toohey, Margaret Lawrence, Grand Duchess Ann Ince, and Flagbearer Colquett Van Dyke, with Supreme Effendi Kim Leonard. Hip! Hip! Hurrah! for the #TrueBlueKrewe
RaMet rocked and rolled through coronations for the Grand Krewes of Ennead and Ptah in January; our royal Court is just getting warmed up for our own coronation on February 4th! #truebluekrewe
Carnival Memphis Grand Krewes came out to play with the Mystic Society, and all enjoyed the evening filled with tricky trivia questions, mulligans, music, dancing, lots of decorations, food, and trophies! Everybody loves trophies! Congratulations to our friends in Sphinx, and Ptolemy, for winning some of the first trophies of this carnival season! We aren't sure if winning the trophies was the most fun, or taking trophy shots with Ed Galfsky after everyone duct-taped him to the wall! And, like all parties with a purpose, big money was raised for this year's charities! Hip! Hip! Hurrah!
The mystic society has a new court for the 2017 Carnival Memphis season. Ma'at LXXV was introduced after a long search by "Inspector Clouseau" - and what a beautiful Court!
(l to r) Duchess Margaret, Grand Duchess Ann, Duchess Gara, Duchess Rose, Duchess Judy, Ma'at LXXV is Sara of the House of VanDyke, Ra LXXIV is Charles of the House of Smithers, and Flagbearer Colquett VanDyke. Hip! Hip! Hurrah for the #truebluekrewe RaMet welcomed TCU and Georgia fans to Memphis by throwing beads and candy to the crowds in the Liberty Bowl parade last Thursday afternoon. Don't let the beautiful blue sky fool y'all -- it was cold! Real cold! And, windy! Our krewe perservered and warmed up later at Local where we cheered on the Razorbacks on the big screen. A wonderful, true blue, day! #TrueBlueKrewe |
